Russian has two ways to form the comparative (e.g., "better", "bigger").
Simple (synthetic) comparative
Add -ее (-ей) to the adjective stem: | Adjective | Comparative | Meaning | |-----------|-------------|---------| | быстрый | быстрее | faster | | красивый | красивее | more beautiful | | сильный | сильнее | stronger |
Common irregular comparatives: | Adjective | Comparative | Meaning | |-----------|-------------|---------| | хороший | лучше | better | | плохой | хуже | worse | | большой | больше | bigger / more | | маленький | меньше | smaller / less | | старый | старше (age) / старее | older | | молодой | моложе | younger |
Than (чем)
Use чем to compare two things: - Москва больше, чем Санкт-Петербург (Moscow is bigger than St. Petersburg). - Я лучше читаю, чем ты (I read better than you).
