Complex Sentence Connectors: потому что, поэтому, когда, если

To build more complex sentences, you need connecting words. These are the most important ones at A2 level.

Because (потому что)

• Потому что answers "why?" (reason/cause).
• Я не пришёл, потому что заболел (I didn't come because I got sick).
• Note: потому что can be split: по тому, что… but most learners use it as a single unit.

Therefore (поэтому)

• Поэтому introduces a result/consequence.
• Я заболел, поэтому не пришёл (I got sick, therefore I didn't come).

When (когда)

• Когда introduces a time clause.
• Когда я был ребёнком, мы жили в деревне (When I was a child, we lived in the village).
• Я позвонил когда пришёл домой (I called when I came home).

If (если)

• Если introduces a condition.
• Если будет время, я приду (If I have time, I'll come).
• Если не знаешь, спроси (If you don't know, ask).

Tip

In Russian, when a clause starts with когда or если, it is often followed by то (like "then" in English): Когда я прихожу домой, то сразу ужинаю (When I come home, (then) I immediately have dinner).
