Adjectives must agree with the noun they describe in gender, number, and case. Here are the basic nominative endings:
| Noun Type | Adjective Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | -ый / -ий | новый дом (new house), синий музей (blue museum) |
| Feminine | -ая / -яя | новая книга (new book), синяя ручка (blue pen) |
| Neuter | -ое / -ее | новое окно (new window), синее небо (blue sky) |
| Plural | -ые / -ие | новые книги (new books) |
Word order
Adjectives almost always come before the noun, just like in English.
Soft vs. hard endings
- After г, к, х, ж, ш, щ, ц: use -ий, -ая, -ое, -ие (not -ый, -ыя, etc.) E.g., русский (Russian), большой (big).
