Basic Prepositions: в, на, у, с, из, к

A1 — Beginner

Russian prepositions require a specific case after them. Here are the most common A1 prepositions:

Preposition Meaning Case Required
в in, into Prepositional (location) or Accusative (direction)
на on, at Prepositional (location) or Accusative (direction)
у at/by, near Genitive
с with Instrumental
из from (inside) Genitive
к towards Dative

Examples

  • в доме (in the house, Prep.), в дом (into the house, Acc.)
  • на работе (at work, Prep.), на работу (to work, Acc.)
  • у меня (at my place / I have), у метро (near the metro)
  • с другом (with a friend)
  • из Москвы (from Moscow)
  • к другу (towards/to a friend)
